Winnie

8th Grade Graduates of 2023 (Rodi)

At 14, Winnie’s life in Homa-Bay town, Kenya, is a blend of hope and hardship. One of six children, she lives with her parents, a teacher and a farmer. The family’s large size means resources are often stretched thin, and with her father working their garden plot, their livelihood is tied directly to the unpredictable nature of farming. These daily struggles are a constant backdrop to her life, but they have also fueled her ambition for a future that’s more secure.

The turning point for Winnie came in 2018 when, at the age of 11, her parents moved her to the Achungo school. She had been at a different school since the third grade, but it was at Achungo that she truly found her place. The school’s environment immediately captivated her, with a vibrant community of “many teachers and fun children to play with.” This welcoming atmosphere made her love the school and encouraged her to participate fully in activities. She quickly developed a passion for football (soccer); a sport her father had always practiced with her.

Achungo offers more than just academics; it provides a nurturing space for Winnie to grow and explore her interests. During breaks, she finds joy in simple activities like reading storybooks in the library and playing with friends. This balance of learning and leisure has allowed her to thrive. But her dreams extend far beyond the classroom. Winnie has set her sights on two very different, but equally ambitious, careers: becoming a soldier or an actress. The idea of becoming a soldier stems from her love for marching with the Kenya Scouts and her desire to work hard and “achieve [her] destination.”

Winnie’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact of a supportive educational environment. The challenges of her family life have not stopped her. Instead, the Achungo school has given her the tools, confidence, and community to pursue her dreams. It has provided a stable and encouraging space where she can learn, play, and build a foundation for a future as a soldier, an actress, or whatever she sets her mind to.
