Home for Stella is 2 km away from Achungo where she lives with guardians. She also has an older sister (at University) and an older brother.
Stella (14) came to Achungo starting in 5th grade in 2017. Prior to that she had attended Lake Primary (it was close to her home). She told us, “At Achungo there are no school fees, the teachers are nice, there are books and computers and you can make friends. The teachers love us so much and the compound is beautiful.” Although in Kenya public primary school is supposed to be tuition-free, schools charge for each exam and often have fees for teacher’s aides, “enrollment fees,” and require purchasing a school uniform, among other costs. Those can be impossible costs for the extreme poor in this area.
Stella enjoys studying, playing football, reading stories, and sharing with Ashley, her best friend.
Congratulations on your achievement, Stella!
