Sandra

8th Grade Graduates of 2023 (Rodi)

14-year-old Sandra lives in Homa-Bay County, Kenya, with her parents and two siblings. Her father’s work as a teacher is their main source of income, while her mother is not employed.  Sandra understands the value of education as the way to a better future, a belief that led her parents to seek out a school that could offer more than what they could afford.

Sandra’s life changed dramatically when her parents enrolled her at the Achungo school when she was in the second grade. Before that, she attended Happy Learners Academy in Kendu-Bay, but she and her parents recognized a profound difference at Achungo. She quickly saw that the facilities were better and the students’ academic performance was far superior. She was captivated by the sight of students actively learning and enjoying their English lessons, and she felt an immediate connection to the school’s positive environment and teachers who were encouraging and full of good advice.

Achungo’s true value to Sandra lies in its mission to support underprivileged students. She recognizes and deeply appreciates that the school helps “poor families” and orphans, offering them a sponsorship that provides for all their needs. This support system has given her the stability and resources to focus on her studies and her friendships. Beyond the classroom, she enjoys playing and studying with her friends, as well as listening to music and watching movies.

Sandra has set her sights on a future as a doctor fueled by a desire to give back and help others. She wants to be able to “save lives” and “treat those who cannot afford medical bill fees.” Her story is a testament to the transformative power of a supportive educational environment. Achungo has not only provided her with a quality education but has also nurtured her compassionate spirit, proving that with the right support, a determined student can overcome significant obstacles and work toward a life of purpose and service.
