Hestone came to Achungo 5 years ago at age 9 to join our 3rd grade after her mother, Lillian Achieng, found out about the school. Her father, Felix Onyango, is an engineer who works in Kisii and comes home on weekends. Hestone’s family includes her sister Gigi (3), and brother Milton Omondi (10), both of whom are at Achungo.
Earlier she attended Kehancha Progressive Academy but the family then had to move to Migori (both are about 70 km away). She says Kehancha did not have a library and had no computer lessons. When she first came to Achungo her teacher seemed very kind and very happy with her.
Heston: “At Achungo they teach us well so we can excel in our exams, they feed us well, and we can board.” (The older girls live at Achungo in the dorm). She likes Math and English, enjoys volleyball and football (soccer), and goes home on holidays to visit her family. She misses her parents but the happiest day of her life was the day she came to Achungo. She wants to become a journalist or an engineer like her father.
