Candy

8th Grade Graduates of 2023 (Rodi)

For 14-year-old Candy, life in Lo-Rateng’i, Kenya, is marked by the daily struggle of poverty. Growing up with her parents, a younger sibling, and a cousin, Candy’s family relies on their work tending their garden and sometimes selling produce. This constant fight for resources could easily be a barrier to her education, but Candy’s resilient spirit shines through. She is determined to succeed, seeing education not just as a privilege, but as her pathway to a better future.

The Achungo school has been a sanctuary for Candy for the past nine years. She loves the supportive environment, where teachers are not only “friendly” and “God-fearing” but also “very concerned” about their students’ well-being. Candy feels that the teachers are always ready to “handle any problem.” This dedicated staff, along with the “friendly director” who helps students with their needs, makes Achungo a place where Candy feels safe and encouraged. It’s a community that provides the stability and guidance her other circumstances can’t always offer.

During breaks at school, she enjoys playing with friends and sharing stories. These moments of camaraderie and friendship are essential to her. Beyond her current studies, Candy has a bold vision for her future. She is working hard to become a successful journalist, inspired by the newscasters she watches on television. This dream reflects her desire to not only escape poverty but also to have a voice and an impact on the world.

Candy’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative value of a good education. Despite the hardships of her daily life, the support and encouragement she receives at Achungo have given her the tools and the confidence to pursue her dreams. The school provides a safe space for her to learn and grow, turning her struggles into motivation. With her drive and the unwavering support of her school community, Candy Prudence is a beacon of hope, proving that with the right support, a child can overcome significant obstacles and build a life of purpose.
